A few years ago, Bain & Company surveyed high-tech
executives to see if their predictions and aspirations for the Internet of
Things came true.
Two years ago, industrial customers were more interested in
the potential for predictive maintenance to identify equipment that was on the
verge of failure and prevent costly downtime. In a recent study, enthusiasm
subsided, mainly because the implementation was more complex than expected and
the data value was less than expected.
Unfortunately, preventive maintenance was not the only IIoT
use case that turned out to be more difficult to implement than originally
anticipated, primarily due to the integration with existing OT and IT systems.
However, the long-term outlook remains positive. Developments such as advanced
computing, 5G connectivity and the proliferation of connected devices instill
confidence in the potential for efficiency gains over the next 5-8 years. End
customers will need vendor support in specific areas to achieve the expected
performance. In particular, customers are focusing more on security, data
portability and IT / OT integration.
While the deployment was more complex in some respects,
there are certain use cases that are high priority for customers and where
vendors have experience to deploy right now. One of the more popular use cases
has been remote monitoring of equipment. The other was quality control. Energy
